35. edycję festiwalu w Cannes w 1982 roku przenikało dekadenckie przeczucie rychłego końca sztuki filmowej. Wim Wenders postanowił nakręcić na ten temat film. Zaprosił 16 reżyserek i reżyserów do jedynego wolnego wówczas pokoju o numerze 666 w hotelu Martinez w Cannes. W pokoju były kamera i magnetofon, a na stole leżały napisane na kartce pytania o kondycję ówczesnego kina. Każdy z zaproszonych gości miał je przeczytać, przemyśleć, a następnie samodzielnie włączyć kamerę i zaprezentować swój punkt widzenia na ten temat. Jean-Luc Godard, Paul Morrissey, Mike De Leon, Monte Hellman, Romain Goupil, Susan Seidelman, Noël Simsolo, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, Robert Kramer, Ana Carolina, Maroun Bagdadi, Steven Spielberg, Michelangelo Antonioni, Yilmaz Güney i sam Wim Wenders przedstawili własną wizję przyszłości filmu, prezentując różne zdania na temat możliwości jego przetrwania i tego, czy będzie miało jeszcze w przyszłości coś do powiedzenia. W efekcie powstał film-przypowieść o roli i znaczeniu kina.

In this film Godard, Fassbinder, Spielberg, Antonioni, Herzog and other filmmakers give response to the question: “Is cinema a language about to get lost, an art about to die?”. Some have answered the question very extensively, others were unsettled by the situation and remained silent. “There was a general gloom at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. The feeling that the end of cinema was inevitable was roaming everywhere. A ”black hole” was opening in film history so to say. So I thought I would do a survey among my colleagues about the future of cinema. I invited them all to the only available room in the whole town. Room 666 at the Hotel Martinez.
