Przed stu laty mówiło się, że Buenos Aires to kawałek Europy, który oderwał się od kontynentu i dobił do wybrzeży Ameryki Południowej. W połowie XX wieku, kiedy filmowcy w Meksyku i Brazylii odkrywali pełen kontrastów i różnic kulturowych świat spoza dzielnic, w których sami żyli, Leopoldo Torre Nilsson kierował kamerę na zamożną burżuazję Buenos Aires. Bohaterowie Ręki w potrzasku żyją, jakby czas stanął w miejscu na przełomie wieków, kiedy ich przodkowie przypłynęli z Europy. Ominęły ich wojny światowe, laicyzacja, egalitaryzacja społeczna. Niczym bastion tradycji opierają się nowoczesności i wiążącej się z nią wielokulturowości nowego kontynentu. Młoda bohaterka Laura jak co roku wraca na wakacje z internatu szkoły katolickiej. Tym razem postanawia rozwikłać tajemnicę skrywaną przez matkę i ciotki w ponurej rodzinnej posiadłości. Filmy Torre Nilssona porównywane są do obrazów Bergmana z tego samego okresu, z którymi konkurowały o nagrody festiwalu w Cannes.

A hundred years ago, people used to say that Buenos Aires was a fragment of Europe torn from the continent and carried to the shores of South America. In the mid-twentieth century, while filmmakers in Mexico and Brazil were turning their attention to worlds marked by sharp contrasts and cultural difference beyond the neighbourhoods they themselves inhabited, Leopoldo Torre Nilsson focused his camera on the wealthy bourgeoisie of Buenos Aires. The characters in The Hand in the Trap live as if time had stood still at the turn of the century, when their ancestors arrived from Europe. The world wars, secularisation and the drive towards social equality seem to have passed them by. Like a bastion of tradition, they resist modernity and the multiculturalism of the new continent. Each year, the young Laura returns home for the holidays from her Catholic boarding school. This time, she resolves to uncover the secret her mother and aunts are hiding in the family’s sombre mansion. Torre Nilsson’s films were often compared to Bergman’s works from the same period and competed alongside them for prizes at Cannes.
