W przeciwieństwie do Hermiony młoda czarownica nie radzi sobie jednak w szkole i dlatego musi zostać po lekcjach na 300 lat. Towarzyszy jej stary woźny, który zabija czas opowieściami o swoich doświadczeniach ze świata ludzi. Pokazuje nawet, w której książce znajduje się magiczna formuła umożliwiająca dotarcie do „naszej” rzeczywistości. Gdy Saxana przeczyta zaklęcie na głos, zamieni się w sowę i odleci na dobre. W szkole wybucha panika – jeśli dziewczyna nie wróci w ciągu 46 godzin, będzie musiała pozostać wśród ludzi na zawsze. „Dziewczyna na miotle” to jeden z najbardziej udanych tytułów we wspólnej filmografii Václava Vorlíčka i Miloša Macourka. Komedia wykorzystuje ulubiony motyw twórców, czyli konfrontację świata fantastycznego ze względnie normalnym światem rzeczywistym (do tego pomysłu powrócili m.in. w serialu telewizyjnym Arabela). Tytułowa bohaterka musi uporządkować sobie znaczenie podstawowych pojęć, jak dobro i zło, nienawiść i miłość, a jej przygody składają się na inteligentne, pomysłowe i zabawne widowisko.
