Mit Gardela jest nierozerwalnie związany ze światowym triumfem nowego gatunku muzycznego, który w ojczyźnie artysty, Argentynie, był pogardzany jako plebejski i wulgarny. Dopiero wielka kariera filmowa Gardela w Europie i Stanach Zjednoczonych przekonały „Portenos” do muzyki królującej dotychczas w dokach i lupanarach. Even ninety years after the tragic death of the “Nightingale of Buenos Aires,” not even the creator of modern tango, Astor Piazzolla, has managed to dethrone him. Gardel’s legend is inseparable from the worldwide triumph of the genre – a music that, in his native Argentina, had long been dismissed as vulgar and plebeian. Only Gardel’s spectacular film career in Europe and the United States convinced the portenos to embrace the music that had once thrived mainly in the docks and brothels. One of the finest films featuring Gardel is Tango Bar. The story unfolds aboard an ocean liner where a young thief named Laura operates with the captain’s tacit approval. Ricardo, who becomes fascinated by her, discovers the truth about her schemes. During a shipboard dance he saves her from the police, and in return Laura promises to change her life. The film features Gardel performing such classics as Por una cabeza, Lejana tierra mía, Los ojos de mi moza and Arrabal amargo.
