Patrick O’Brian napisał aż 20 powieści o morskiej karierze kapitana Jacka Aubreya, oficera marynarki w służbie JKM w czasie wojen napoleońskich, ale film przywołuje zdarzenia głównie z tomu dziesiątego. Wieloletnia przyjaźń (i koleżeński spór) kapitana z pokładowym chirurgiem, doktorem Stephenem Maturinem, stała się główną osią narracyjną w adaptacji, w której napięcie płynie z ciągłej pogoni brytyjskiego okrętu Surprise za francuskim Acheronem.

Russell Crowe wnosi w rolę Aubreya dowcip i brawurę, a Paul Bettany jest znakomity jako wiecznie sfrustrowany Maturin, który najchętniej zaprzestałby ścigania Francuzów i poświęcił się badaniu nieznanych gatunków na Galapagos. W tle przygód i wspaniale inscenizowanych sekwencji akcji świtają pierwsze przebłyski nowoczesności, której symbolem jest rodząca się powoli teoria ewolucji. Weir’s late masterpiece and the most expensive film of his career—a maritime adventure featuring superb scenes of naval battles and chases, as well as a philosophical reflection on two ways of understanding the world: humble observation and conquering bravado.

Patrick O’Brian wrote as many as twenty novels about the naval career of Captain Jack Aubrey, an officer in the service of His Majesty during the Napoleonic Wars, but the film draws primarily on events from the tenth volume. The long-standing friendship (and friendly rivalry) between the captain and the ship’s surgeon, Dr. Stephen Maturin, becomes the central narrative thread of the adaptation, in which tension arises from the British ship HMS Surprise’s relentless pursuit of the French vessel Acheron.

Russell Crowe brings wit and bravado to the role of Aubrey, while Paul Bettany is excellent as the perpetually frustrated Maturin, who would gladly abandon the chase and devote himself to studying unknown species in the Galápagos. Against the backdrop of adventure and magnificently staged action sequences, the first glimmers of modernity begin to emerge, symbolized by the slowly developing theory of evolution.

Although Weir and cinematographer Russell Boyd would go on to make one more film together, it is Master and Commander that stands as the crowning achievement of their collaboration, which began with Picnic at Hanging Rock—Boyd received the only Academy Award of his career for his cinematography on this film.
